The Volunteer

The greatest pub on Baker Street! The Volunteer, with the best selection of draught beer in the area and the pub with a fantastic traditional british food menu.

The Volunteer is situated at the very top end of Baker Street and a stones throw away from beautiful Regents.

It is named the Volunteer due to being a sign up station during the War. It occupies the remains of a mansion owned by the Neville family, a much-feared feudal mob of the 17th Century. To the relief of the local townsfolk, the family's reign of terror ended in 1654 when the mansion mysteriously burned down.

The original cellars are still used by us today and are said to be haunted by Richard Neville's ghost. Rumour has it that he has been seen on many occasions walking through the cellar dressed in surcoat, breeches and lavish stockings. On the back of this rumour Sky TV's Most Haunted crew brought their cameras down earlier last year to see what they could find. Seemingly Richard Neville was feeling a little shy that night!

The bar itself welcomes you on arrival with high tables and chairs in this area perfect for vertical drinking. To the rear of the bar area sits a few comfy tables perfect for dining as a bigger group. To the left on the slightly raised section, it plays host to 2 sofa areas very well suited to groups. One of up to 25 & one of up to 45 people meeting for drinks and snacks. The front part of this section has an old fire place lit with candles on Summer nights and a roaring open fire come Winter. French doors open right out onto our street where smokers can still feel part of their group without having to 'hide behind the bike shed'. To the back of this raised area is a well placed dining space for up to 30 people & outside sit 7 tables for eating, drinking & smoking alike.
